Feverish, dreamlike, meditative, plastic, mutant. The soundtrack of La Sombra del Tiburón (MANTARRAYA FILMS, 2024) accompanies the plot, in a way it is its shadow. It determines its atmosphere and its very particular tempo.
The original idea for the score, shared with director Gonzalo López-Gallego, was to turn dance music into a cinematic score. Remate became a strange, ghostly DJ, an almost omnipresent figure but with the appearance of the oxygen that Alma (Alba Galocha) breathes.
"There are many 'dance' musicians I admire, from Matthew Herbert to Jeff Mills. I also love even more abstract 'electronic' musicians like Brian Leeds. Not to mention that masters like Ryūichi Sakamoto and even Scott Walker have used synthetic instruments on many occasions, in a dreamy and also aggressive electronic key that I find magnetic. I had them all in my head for a while, then isolated myself and let things happen in my studio," says Remate.
The Roland JD XI synthesizer, the Critter and Guitari pocket piano, the Moog Grandmother, the Sledge Studiologic, the piano, synthetic percussions, rhythm boxes... all these are deployed throughout the time spent composing, almost as long as López-Gallego took to make his film, almost 3 years.
A lot of music that takes off with the intention of dancing and lands with a scenic and even somewhat relieving intention.
