“American Star” Original soundtrack
American Star OST. Remate / La Cupula Music (2024)
"Director Gonzalo López-Gallego creates a strong frame around the characters in both visual and narrative terms, while a lovely score credited to Remate creates a limpid poignancy" Leslie Felperin, The Guardian.
In American Star, the score acts as a kind of couch, a meditation on pause. The film has an existentialist, humanistic, and even philosophical dimension, and the music was a great way to manifest it. The mix of piano, guitar, and chamber quartet elements, along with the use of synthesizers, provides a unique and almost ghostly sound that perfectly complements the atmosphere surrounding the story. "The film's composer focused on the natural sounds of the island," notes Caitlin Dickenson in Set the Tape.
The soundtrack of American Star stands out for its intuitive and natural use of sounds. Before trying instruments, the music resonates in Remate's head for weeks, and only when the idea is tangible does he start recording in his studio, creating layers as if it were a canvas. One of the simplest pieces, Wilson & Gloria, emerged from playing the piano and guitar simultaneously, where the piano would anticipate the guitar, creating a dialogue between both instruments. This piece became one of the director's favorites.
